Managing your practice

Solo lawyers and owners of small law firms, in particular, benefit from practice management coaching. You are responsible for tasks that, at larger firms, are handled by professional staff - like timekeeping, billing and expense, and personnel management. Roy can help you stay on track -- maximizing revenue while minimizing overhead.

Solos and small-firm owners also operate without the benefit of colleagues to provide valuable feedback on the day-to-day decisions of running a business. As your practice management coach, Roy Ginsburg becomes a realistic sounding board for your problems, questions and ideas.

Roy also coaches lawyers who are working in a larger law-firm setting. As you progress from associate, to partner, to head of your practice or industry group, to firm-wide governance, you are expected to demonstrate management skills that you never learned in law school. Roy can be a supportive practice management coach as you climb the law-firm ladder.

For example:

The owner of a small law firm had plenty of work - but was struggling with the logistics of getting all of this work done in a cost-effective manner. She heard Roy speak at the Alaska State Bar Association annual convention, and started to rely on him as a sounding board on practice management issues. As a result, her firm was able to set priorities and cut through administrative details.

A partner at a mid-sized law firm was having a hard time dealing with internal political issues, which she described as a "minefield." Roy helped her determine the real issues at stake and come up with a plan to successfully handle them. Roy also coached this lawyer in the area of business development, where he helped her grow her book of business from virtually nothing to well over six figures.

One partner at a mid-sized law firm checks in with Roy periodically for advice on managing his busy practice -- including associate supervision, client service and communication with firm management about his professional and personal goals. He particularly appreciates Roy's encouragement to be proactive - to look weeks or months ahead to anticipate potential problems and the needs of his practice.
